In 1859, a town was established in Bedford Center which later came to be known as Temperance. On December 8, 1884, Lewis Ansted became the first postmaster when a post office was set up in Temperance. It was named after the suggestion of a woman belonging to the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. She proposed the name “Temperance” in accordance with the Union’s beliefs. A petition to change the name of Bedford Center to Temperance was circulated, and it was successfully changed. In the earlier years of Temperance, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages was forbidden. The population was 9,188 at the 2020 census.
